The difference
A code tells you where to look. It doesn’t tell you what broke.
Modern cars run dozens of computers watching thousands of values a second. When one of those values falls outside its expected range, the car stores a code. That code names a circuit or a reading — not the part that failed.
This is where a lot of money gets wasted. A code that mentions an oxygen sensor gets treated as a bad oxygen sensor, the part gets replaced, and three weeks later the light is back on, because the sensor was reporting a problem somewhere else entirely.
We test the circuit before we condemn the part. It takes longer than reading a code. It is also the only way to fix something once.

The engine computer stored a fault because a reading fell outside its expected range. The code names the circuit or the reading — not the part that failed.
Commonly indicates
- An unmetered air leak after the mass-airflow sensor
- A failing oxygen or air-fuel-ratio sensor
- Ignition coil or spark plug wear on one cylinder
- A loose or failed fuel-filler cap seal
- An evaporative-emissions leak somewhere in the system
